I apologize for not having this posted sooner. I will normally have homework posted by Tuesday afternoon.
Thank you for your patience.
Homework Week 2, Due Sept 1
>Read module 1 if you haven't already read it.
>Do Study Guide on p. 24
>Read over the experiments in module 1 if you haven't read them.
>Copy the following chart into the front of your notebook or tape it into your notebook:
Conversion Factors for Physical Science
1 inch = 2.54 cm
1 mile = 1.609 km
1 cup = 236.588 mL
1 quart = .946 L
1 pound = 453.592 g
2.2046 pounds = 1 kg
If you are having difficulty understanding conversion using the factor-label method, there is a step by step explanation below as well as a couple of practice problems. Let me know if this doesn't help you understand.
Factor-Label Method Step-by- Step
Convert 14 pounds into grams.
1. What do you know? Put that over 1.
14 lbs.
1
2. What do you need to know? Multipy that by its conversion factor. (See chart above.)
14 lbs. x 453.592g =
1 1 lb.
3. Now, do the math...
14 lbs. x 453.592 grams = 6350.288 grams
1 1 lb.
Let's Try another one...
I need 235 mL of water for a recipe. What is that in cups?
1. What do I know? Put it over 1.
235 ml
1
2. What do you need to know? Multiply what you know by that.
235 ml x ____cups =
1
3. Now, put in the conversion factor from the chart above.
235 mL x __1__cups = (make sure you divide this time)
1 236.6 mL
4. Do the math...
235 mL x __1__cup = .993 cups or about 1 cup
1 236.588 mL
